Chapter 14

Macleod watched Jona Nakamura moving back and forward across the scene. Of all her colleagues, she was the smallest, a diminutive Asian woman. What she lacked in height, she made up for with savvy and enthusiasm. Macleod was always impressed by how her forensic team looked to her. Yes, they would get on with their own work, but she was the first port of call. The entire operation was so smooth.

Jona was a calming influence on an investigation. Even when you stepped out of line, tried to enter a scene with the wrong gear on, or were about to contaminate something, she never got angry. Instead, Jona was quick to act. She could be brusque with you, letting you know without shouting at you that you’d made an error, and she wasn’t impressed. On the other hand, if you were struggling, Jona was a great source of help.

Right now, Macleod was waiting on a report from her, and she’d seen him several times waiting on the edge of the cordon. He knew that whatever pressure she was under, she wouldn’t relent, doing her job until she was ready for him to enter the scene with her. Only then would she give her report. Macleod appreciated that professionalism, but it didn’t make him any less agitated as he waited to hear what she would say.

It looked like a repeat killing, and the trouble with repeat killings, as Macleod always said, was it wasn’t the first-time repeat. It was the second, the third and the continuation that meant you had to act quickly. You had to get to the killer. A single murder and you didn’t know if there was another coming. Two, that usually meant there was more on the way.

Perry and Susan were organising the uniform detail around the school. More were arriving with the expected increased media attention now that there was a second killing. The school had almost got back to normal after the first, but Macleod knew that this would shake things up completely. Whereas before, the deputy headmistress might have been able to phone parents and say, ‘Look, it’s okay. This has happened; we’re dealing with it; it’s unexpected.’ With a double killer on the loose, no parent was going to want their children to still be there, and the press would come in droves.

One murder was juicy, especially with the way the headmistress had been found, but most of that had been kept quiet. Therefore it was just the death of a headmistress. With the second death though, questions would be asked, and the press always get out any juicy details. It would sell papers. The positions the two victims were found in, the words with them would sell papers all right.

Macleod could see it, how their sex lives—fact or fiction—would be plastered over the press. Not in graphic detail though, because these were papers after all. Instead with a salaciousness and possible inuendo that was totally inappropriate for two people having died. Macleod didn’t read papers; he hated them with an extreme passion.
